Nizhny Novgorod residents were told whether they would lose their driver's licenses for a license plate soiled in winter.
October 6, 2025, 18:29 — Society. Russian drivers were warned about the possibility of losing their driver's licenses for concealing a vehicle's license plate. Automotive journalist Pyotr Bakanov told the 360 TV channel who might face such a problem and how to avoid it.
According to him, the current Code of Administrative Offences (KoAP) most often does not protect drivers' interests. If even one digit or letter cannot be read from a distance of 50 meters, the driver faces a fine.
Sometimes an inspector may simply ask to wipe the plate and stop there. Such situations are common, especially in regions with harsh climates where roads are covered with snow and dirt in winter. In addition, the aerodynamic characteristics of a car can cause the plate to become dirty quickly.
Bakanov believes that revoking licenses for this is unfair and illogical, and would also lead to an increase in the number of court cases and bureaucratization of the process.
It should be recalled that last year Russia passed a law under which drivers who hide their vehicle plates using special devices will be deprived of their licenses for a period of 1 to 1.5 years. At present, the Supreme Court also classifies the deliberate concealment of a plate with dirt or snow as a violation.
Bakanov also noted that in recent years drivers have become more responsible and rarely use special devices to hide plates. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
