A photo exhibition about the role of dogs in the Great Patriotic War has opened at the CKS of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
A unique photo exhibition dedicated to the role of dogs in the Great Patriotic War has opened at the Canine Service Center of the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The event is timed to coincide with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Canine All-Around Championship, which is being held in the region for the first time.
The exhibition includes rare archival photographs that tell of the feats of four-legged fighters: from messenger dogs who delivered secret reports under fire to sapper dogs that discovered hundreds of explosive devices.
According to historians, more than 60,000 dogs served at the front during the war years, saving lives and performing tasks beyond human capability.
“This exhibition is a tribute to the memory of the heroism of animals that fought side by side with people for Victory. Today, by holding the Canine All-Around Championship, we continue the traditions: modern service dogs are just as devoted to the cause as their predecessors in 1941–1945,” said Colonel of Police Vladimir Gankov, head of the Canine Service Center of the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Simultaneously with the exhibition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Canine All-Around Championship is taking place at the “More Sport” sports base in the Gorodets Municipal District. Participants are competing in the following disciplines:
- detection of explosive substances;
- detention of offenders;
- overcoming an obstacle course.
Guests can not only view archival shots but also watch service dogs at work in real time.
