A dietitian explained why candies containing sorbitol have become the new trend among young people.
02 October 2025 16:29. Society — In Russia, a new product has become popular among schoolchildren — Chinese sugar-free candies that quickly gained traction on social media. However, behind this trend lies a serious problem: such candies can cause diarrhea. Despite this, children continue to buy them, and some even use them for weight loss, believing the laxative effect will help them lose weight.
The reason is that these candies contain a large amount of sorbitol — a natural sugar substitute known for its laxative properties. Gastroenterologist and dietitian Nuriya Dianova told the TV channel "360" that sorbitol can cause gas, discomfort and abdominal pain, especially in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
IBS is a functional disorder that is often found in people with high levels of stress and anxiety. It is characterized by increased sensitivity of the intestinal mucosa to various food components. Therefore, consuming candies with sorbitol can worsen IBS symptoms in people who suffer from this condition.
Diarrhea from laxatives does not lead to weight loss, the expert emphasized. A person eats 1.5–3.5 kg of food a day, and by the end of the day their weight increases by a kilogram due to fluid retention. Laxatives are intended only for the temporary treatment of constipation.
In addition, some sugar substitutes, including sorbitol, can negatively affect the gut microbiota, creating the illusion of weight loss.
Giving up sugar is not always justified. Sugar is safe in moderate amounts — up to 15 grams per day (three teaspoons).
Instead of looking for sugar substitutes, it is better to focus on a balanced diet and portion control. For example, you can make a dessert from sweet protein, Belev pastila, dark chocolate, chia seeds and nuts, but do not overindulge in such treats.
