Scammers have begun using phone numbers registered in India and starting with +916 to deceive Russians, the 360 TV channel warned, citing cyber police data.
The agency explained that in India phone numbers begin with the prefix +91, followed by a city code. Similar numbers with the prefix +7916 belong to subscribers registered in the Moscow Region.
Police officers note that criminals deliberately use such combinations to mislead people. A slight difference of one digit can significantly affect the perception of a number and create the illusion that the call is coming from a familiar region.
Law enforcement agencies urge citizens to be more vigilant and not to trust calls from unfamiliar numbers, even if they appear similar to numbers from their region.
Earlier it was reported that a resident of Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod Region mistook scammers for law enforcement officers and handed over 1.6 million rubles to them.
