Sergey Yakovlev presented the Nizhny Novgorod Region's best practices in working with traditional crafts at Russian Creative Week.

      The Minister of Tourism and Crafts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Sergey Yakovlev, on September 26 in Moscow at the Russian Creative Week presented the best regional practices in working with folk arts and crafts. This was reported by the regional ministry.

      “In the Nizhny Novgorod Region there is a comprehensive support system for organizations of folk arts and crafts. The key is not only financial assistance in the form of reimbursements, but also holding events, working on human resources potential, and attracting designers to create collaborations. Today the fashion for identity has become a stimulus for the revival of interest in crafts from both the creative business sector and the end consumer,” said Sergey Yakovlev.

      In particular, the Nizhny Novgorod Region was the first in the country to create a unified regional brand of folk arts and crafts — “ChelovechNO.” Products from Nizhny Novgorod crafts producers are presented under the unified regional brand at 50 key gas stations in the region.

      “Reimagining crafts today occurs not only through collaborations with designers and artists, but also through modern marketing and digital tools. For example, ‘Khokhloma’ tea with linden picked in the Semyonov forests, packaged in the aesthetic of the craft. We are also trying more unexpected formats — an ‘Atomic Matryoshka’ at our Strelka, an atomic reactor decorated in Khokhloma, and even a uniform for the Russian national figure skating team. It’s about cooperation and integrating the ornaments and imagery of crafts into various spheres of art and life,” the minister emphasized.

      The regional Ministry of Tourism reminded that the development of places where traditional crafts are practiced contributes to increasing the region’s tourist appeal. This is one of the tasks the region is working on as part of the implementation of the national project “Tourism and Hospitality.”

      At the Russian Creative Week the exhibition zone “Khokhloma Through the Ages” was also presented, demonstrating the continuity and development of one of Russia’s main folk arts and crafts. Visitors can learn about both traditional Khokhloma painting and its modern incarnation — the debut collection of the “Khokhloma” brand. The exhibition shows that Khokhloma remains a relevant cultural code, transforms over time, serves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for contemporary art, and is also an important part of the creative industries.

      Recall that the national project “Tourism and Hospitality” launched in Russia in 2025 at the initiative of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. It envisages the development of infrastructure, production of equipment, training of personnel for the tourism sector, promotion of travel around Russia, as well as ensuring quality service and safe, comfortable trips.

Since 2020 the event has been shaping a visionary agenda, new trends, practical business solutions, investment partnerships, and designing joint strategies for the country’s future development in the creative industries.
