On September 24, a multiprofessional team of Nizhny Novgorod specialists in the field of child mental health conducted outreach consultations at the Vyksa Central District Hospital. During the sessions, the medical team examined and provided recommendations to almost 30 children from Vyksa as well as from the Navashinsky and Kulebaki districts.
According to the region’s chief freelance pediatric specialist — a psychiatrist at the regional Ministry of Health, Anna Kondyurina, such outreach visits help bring specialized medical care closer to residents of districts remote from the regional center.
"This form of providing medical care is in high demand in the region’s districts where there are no specialized child mental health facilities. Children are usually referred to outreach consultations by primary care physicians — pediatricians and neurologists — with the aim of establishing a diagnosis, conducting additional examinations, and selecting therapy. Specialists from the Consultative and Diagnostic Center for the Mental Health of Children and Adolescents in Nizhny Novgorod make 4–5 outreach visits across the region annually," Anna Kondyurina said.
During examinations, doctors identify various neuropsychiatric disorders: from delays in mental and speech development, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, to autism spectrum disorders. Physicians also pay close attention to the diagnosis and prevention of depressive disorders and suicidal behavior in adolescents. Depending on the clinical picture, the severity of symptoms, and the child’s condition, parents are given recommendations on treatment and further monitoring. In some cases, specialists invite parents and children for follow-up appointments at the regional Clinical Diagnostic Center to monitor the course of the disorder, adjust treatment, and conduct additional consultations.
"Even completely healthy children who do not require the attention of a child psychiatrist are given recommendations on daily routine, recreation, and sleep. Sometimes adjustment of child–parent relationships is required. Changing certain established adult behavior patterns helps significantly improve the family climate, making father–child relationships warmer and more respectful. This directly has a positive effect on the mental health of both. Family psychotherapy proves to be an extremely effective nonpharmacological method for treating behavioral disorders in young patients," the chief freelance pediatric psychiatrist said.
Traditionally, as part of the outreach visits, medical workers also give lectures to teachers, social workers, and juvenile affairs inspectors from district institutions on the neuropsychiatry of children’s behavior at different ages. At these educational sessions, among other things, doctors identify "red flags" — warning signs that specialists should not overlook in children’s words and actions. They also explain the physiological causes of different patterns of behavior in minors — this knowledge enables specialists to provide higher-quality support to children during all difficult stages of growing up.
Recall that the development of a system of psychotherapeutic assistance for the child population, as well as the creation of conditions for sound mental health, are important tasks assigned to the region under the national project "Family." It came into effect in the country in 2025 by the instruction of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The new national project is the successor to the earlier national projects "Demography" and "Culture." It includes seven federal projects: "Family Support," "Family Values," "Culture for the Family," "Pushkin Card," "Older Generation," "Protection of Motherhood and Childhood," and "Large Families."
