United Metallurgical Company (OMK) has begun developing design documentation for the restoration of the buildings of the historic workshops of the Verkhne-Vyksunsky Metallurgical Plant, built in 1765. The plant was founded in the 18th century by the Batashev industrialists in the town of Vyksa, Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The restored buildings will become part of an industrial cultural and tourist space called "Shukhov Park." This project will combine the heritage of Russian industry with modern formats of leisure, education and entrepreneurship.
The northern wing of the workshops will be converted into a support center for creative entrepreneurs. It will host participants of the "Start Your Business" and "OMK-Partnership" programs, which develop areas of design and decorative and applied arts.
Covering 860 square meters, there will be community workshops where residents can hold master classes and educational events for children and adults. A rehearsal hall will also open in the building, intended for music, dance and theater activities.
Creating a unified platform for creative initiatives in Shukhov Park is expected to give a new impetus to the development of small businesses in Vyksa. In addition, it will give townspeople the opportunity to participate in cultural life and implement their own projects.
The southern wing of the workshops will be transformed into a center for industrial tourism. It is from here that a tour route will begin, introducing city visitors to modern production technologies, the history of metallurgy and contemporary art sites.
Since the launch of the "Vyksa. The Plant Has Seen" initiative in 2018, interest in the city has grown significantly. According to internet search engines, the number of queries increased by a third, and the tourist flow to OMK’s site grew almost sixfold — to 4.4 thousand people in 2024.
OMK President Natalya Yeremina emphasized that the restoration of the workshops is part of the company’s large-scale strategy to preserve industrial heritage, develop tourism and improve the quality of life in small towns.
"The restoration of 260-year-old buildings as part of Shukhov Park is not just the preservation of architectural monuments. It is the creation of a new public space that will become an attraction for residents and guests of Vyksa. We are convinced that revived cultural sites, meeting modern demands, can inspire the development and transformation of small industrial towns," Natalya Yeremina said.
