A nuclear power plant could be built in the Nizhny Novgorod region by 2038, Deputy Minister of Energy and Housing and Communal Services of the Nizhny Novgorod region Maxim Bratygin said at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly committee on housing and communal services and the fuel and energy complex, NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" correspondent reports.

According to him, work is already underway in the Nizhny Novgorod region on the issue of building a nuclear power plant. The project was considered due to the region's high energy deficit. According to energy officials, electricity consumption in the region exceeds generation by 53%. The shortfall is covered by inflows from other regions via high-voltage 520 kV lines.

A working group was created to find a solution to the problem, and it has already held a number of meetings with representatives of Rosatom and the System Operator of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Possible sites for the nuclear plant are currently being analyzed. Preliminary options include areas near the settlements of Krasnye Baki, Vyksa and the Sokolsky District.

Bratygin explained that construction of a nuclear power plant is possible only after the facility is included in the General Scheme for the Placement of Electric Power Facilities through 2030. This federal-level document was adopted in 2023 and is revised every six years. The next opportunity to make changes will arise in 2028. Thus, even with a favorable turn of events, the start of the investment cycle could not occur earlier than 2028, since construction and commissioning of a nuclear plant take at least 10 years. The plant's launch is expected no earlier than 2038–2040.

Earlier it was reported that on August 22, during the 80th anniversary of the domestic nuclear industry, Vladimir Putin visited the Russian Federal Nuclear Center in Sarov.
