Incidents. In Nizhny Novgorod, a court found the former head of a correctional colony guilty of corruption, insurance fraud and abuse of official powers.
As reported by the regional investigative department of the Investigative Committee, the evidence presented by the investigation proved sufficient to deliver a guilty verdict.
The court established that as early as 2013, while serving as deputy head of the colony, he received 200,000 rubles from a prisoner in exchange for illegally allowing the latter to leave the correctional facility for another region.
Later, in 2018–2019, while serving as the head of the colony, the man accepted a bribe in the form of a jewelry bracelet worth 40,000 rubles, granting the convict a relaxation of the regime.
In 2022 the defendant defrauded an insurance company: he demanded payment of more than 290,000 rubles, claiming an injury from a fall on a staircase, although in fact he had been injured in a fight.
In addition, in 2023 he signed documents for the conditional early release of a prisoner while concealing the prisoner’s disciplinary violations. Also, using his official position, he repeatedly allowed phone calls for inmates held under strict conditions. These actions, investigators emphasized, materially harmed the interests of society and the state.
The illegal activities were uncovered and halted by employees of the regional FSB and the internal security department of the Federal Penitentiary Service directorate for the Nizhny Novgorod region.
By the court’s sentence the former head of the colony was given 12 years and 6 months of imprisonment, a fine of 2.2 million rubles and a ban on holding positions in executive authorities for four years. He was also stripped of the rank of colonel of the internal service and the 200,000-ruble bribe was confiscated.
Earlier it was reported that the ex-head of the Nizhny Novgorod colony had been convicted over the death of a prisoner. He received a suspended sentence.
