With the development of technology, methods of identity verification such as facial recognition are being used increasingly often. Moreover, since 1 September, Russia has had the option of on-site biometric registration.
Now you can submit an application and an employee will come to your home. The bank will check the documents, take a photo and record a voice sample. All information will be entered into the Unified Biometric System (EBS). After the procedure, the client will be able to use biometrics to pay for travel or purchases.
Banks claim this method is safe, but handing over biometric data can be risky, experts say.
Thus, economist Andrey Barkhota told the TV channel "360" that although the technology is being actively implemented, it should be approached with caution. "At least half of citizens are wary of freely sharing their biometric data, citing that fraudsters could get hold of it," he noted.
Barkhota also pointed out that collecting large volumes of biometric data can lead to negative consequences. For fraudsters, biometrics opens up new opportunities, including blackmail and creating digital copies of people using neural networks.
The expert believes that Russians' concerns are justified, and the willingness to use biometrics will be low due to significant risks. Despite active promotion, the technology is unlikely to become widespread in the near future.
As reported earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents can obtain services at multifunctional centers (MFCs) without a passport — using biometrics: from business registration to applying for benefits for large families.
