A significant decrease in the number of abortions has been recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      In the Nizhny Novgorod region, a significant reduction in the number of abortions has been recorded over a five-year period — almost by one and a half times. This was reported by Alexey Nikonov, a representative of the regional medical community, citing data from the Russian Ministry of Health.

      According to the statistics, more than 8,800 induced abortion procedures were performed in the region in 2019. By the end of 2024 that number had decreased to 5,860 cases.

      At the same time, in the ranking of Russian regions by number of abortions, the Nizhny Novgorod region ranks 15th. Moscow leads — over 20,000 such cases have been recorded there.

      It is important to note that the official statistics include both induced abortions and cases of spontaneous pregnancy loss, i.e., miscarriages.

      The situation across the country is uneven: in some federal subjects the number of abortions fell by about 25%, while in other regions an increase of up to 20% was recorded.

      It was previously reported that one in four women in the Nizhny Novgorod region facing a reproductive choice decides to forgo abortion and give birth.
