Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved a woman whose stroke turned out to have been caused by a rare heart tumor. This was reported by the Telegram channel "Bokal presseka".
The patient sought help in serious condition. It later emerged that the cause was a myxoma — a benign but treacherous tumor that most often occurs in women aged 30 to 50. Its danger lies in the fact that friable particles can enter the bloodstream and block brain vessels, causing an ischemic stroke.
The tumor was detected by an echocardiogram. Conservative treatment was no longer effective, and the doctors decided to take decisive action.
"After consulting with cardiac surgeons, the patient was prepared for surgery; on the 43rd day after the stroke the tumor was successfully removed by surgeons of the B.A. Korolyov Cardiac Surgery Hospital," said Kira Sazhina, a cardiologist at City Clinical Hospital No. 13.
Recovery was not easy. The woman underwent rehabilitation under the supervision of cardiologists, neurologists and specialists in restorative medicine.
Despite the severe condition at admission (23 points on the stroke scale), the woman managed to make significant progress. Her condition is now assessed at 10 points, speech has been restored, and movement is possible with the aid of a walker.
The patient was discharged with sustained improvement.
Earlier it was reported that a 6-year-old tumor of the head was removed from an 87-year-old woman from Nizhny Novgorod.
