A geomagnetic storm is coming to Nizhny Novgorod.

      Scientists from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI and ISZF warned residents of Nizhny Novgorod about a possible geomagnetic storm that may begin as early as tomorrow. The cause is a large coronal hole on the Sun emitting a stream of accelerated solar wind. It is moving toward Earth and, according to preliminary forecasts, will reach our planet on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

      The solar wind speed will begin to increase today. It is expected to reach 500–600 km/s by 14–15 September and may rise to 700 km/s at the peak, which will fall on 16 September. This will put pressure on Earth's magnetosphere and cause geomagnetic disturbances.

      According to preliminary forecasts, the storm should not exceed G2 (moderate), but scientists do not rule out that the situation may change. Typically, such coronal holes cause weak to moderate storms; however, medium-sized holes have previously caused strong disturbances. At the same time, a powerful storm is not expected.

      September has already proven unsettled. In the first 10 days of the month there were three geomagnetic storms. Scientists were especially alarmed by the 10 September storm, caused by extremely weak, almost imperceptible factors.

      Earlier it was reported that forecasters promised sunny weekends for Nizhny Novgorod residents.
