On September 10, 2025, Evgeny Chintsov, Chairman of the City Duma of Nizhny Novgorod, took part in the ceremonial opening of the SMO (special military operation) museum “Heroes of Our Time” at School No. 140 in the Prioksky District.
Also honorary guests at the ceremony were Natalia Smotrakova, a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Region; SMO veteran and participant in the “Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region” program Igor Sychev; and Elena Kharlamova, the widow of Maxim Kharlamov, who died in the line of duty.
The initiative to create the museum came from the school administration. The school became a prize-winner in the grant competition “Together with a Deputy,” which made it possible to acquire the necessary equipment. Teachers managed to interest the students in the idea of creating a museum, and together they implemented the project.
“Since the start of the special military operation, our graduates have been participating in the defense of the Motherland. Here students actively collect humanitarian aid, write letters and cards to the soldiers. That is why the children enthusiastically engaged in gathering information and exhibits for the museum, spoke at length with combat veterans, with relatives of soldiers who took part in the operation, and with the families of those who died defending the sovereignty of Russia,” said the school principal, Tatyana Shirokova.
Addressing those assembled, Natalia Smotrakova stressed the importance of preserving historical heritage.
“I am glad that the school pays such great attention to patriotic education. Children should know that real heroes studied at this school. This is needed both to preserve the memory of their feats and for the children and adolescents themselves, to form their civic stance,” the deputy said.
Igor Sychev shares the deputy’s view that the creation of the SMO museum will contribute to the making of future patriots.
“I look at my photograph and see the faces of the guys from the air assault platoon where I served. They risk their lives so that we can be here and talk. It is very pleasing to see in the eyes of the students present an understanding of this and a genuine emotional response,” he said.
A place of honor in the exhibition is a display dedicated to Colonel Maxim Kharlamov, who died in the line of duty.
“Attempts are being made today to rewrite history, and the defenders of the country, among whom was my friend Maxim Kharlamov, are fighting not only for historical truth but for the very future of our country. War is waged not only on the battlefield but in the minds and hearts of people. Today this museum has acquired another line of defense for Russia’s historical heritage. It is important that students study history both of bygone times and of our time, understand contemporary problems and be ready to respond to its challenges,” Evgeny Chintsov emphasized.
Participants in the event honored Colonel Kharlamov’s memory with a minute of silence.
“I would like to wish that this exhibition be not just a place of memory for fallen heroes, but become, even if a small one, a center of patriotic education for our youth, for future generations, so that children and adolescents understand how important it is to remember our history and value the present,” said the hero’s widow, Elena Kharlamova.
The daughter of Maxim Kharlamov, Darya, an 11th-grade student at School No. 140, agrees with her mother.
“I grew up among people for whom the concepts ‘honor,’ ‘Motherland,’ ‘oath’ were not just words but an integral part of life. I think there should be as many of such true patriots as possible, and a sense of responsibility for the country, for friends, for relatives and loved ones must be instilled from childhood, and done using the examples of the Fatherland’s heroes,” Darya Kharlamova said.
The opening ceremony of the museum was followed by a concert of patriotic songs.
