      The Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region was supplemented in 2025 with sixty new representatives of flora and fauna. This is reported by the publication "Zhivem v Nizhnem" citing the regional Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

      Thirty new animal species were added to the list of protected animals. Among them are the great egret, a capercaillie hen, the bearded tit, the eastern pilokhvost, Sivers's crested tit, the yellow bear moth, the fluffy cocoon moth and others.

      At the same time, 47 animal species were removed from the Red Book. These include the grey-headed woodpecker, the Russian sturgeon, the Volga herring and a number of others.

      The updated list also includes 30 species of fungi, plants and lichens. Among them are the Bessarabian dandelion, Hartman's sedge, the white truffle (also known as the Russian truffle), the yellowing onion, Pontic wormwood and others.

      Conversely, 12 species were removed from the list of protected plants and fungi. These include Flerov's aconite, the woolly-mouthed aconite, viviparous knotweed, the Russian fritillary, nodding sage, the dark-red (rusty) helleborine, the mealy primrose, three-angled Meezia, Pycnothelia papillosa, grayish Bryoria, two-typed Usnea and the membranous Peltigera.
