      New art objects in the form of letters in an Old Slavic style have appeared in Balakhna and Gorodets. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Institute for Urban Environment Development (IRGSNO).

      The letter “B” has appeared in Balakhna. It was formerly called “buki,” which meant the word “letter.” The object alludes to the name of the city, and a griffin is depicted on the letter — one of the figures from traditional Balakhna tiles (izraztsy), which can still be seen on Balakhna’s churches.

      The letter “G” was installed in Gorodets. It was formerly known as “glagoli,” which meant “speak.” It also alludes to the first letter of the city’s name, and the carving of the pharaonka — one of the symbols of Gorodets carving and local folklore.

      It should be recalled that the art objects were installed as part of the “Urban Alphabet” project. It is dedicated to Russian writing and a contemporary reinterpretation of the Old Slavic alphabet. Similar letters have been installed in other cities of the Nizhny Novgorod region — Arzamas, Diveyevo, Bolshoye Boldino, Gorodets and Nizhny Novgorod. The main inspirations for the art objects are the Lavrentievsky Chronicle, compiled in 1377, and the script of the Ostromir Gospel.
