From 1 September 2025 the compulsory subject "History of the Nizhny Novgorod Region" will be introduced into the curriculum of Nizhny Novgorod schools.
As noted by Boris Ginzburg, head of the Department of History and Social Studies at the Nizhny Novgorod Institute for Education Development (NIRO), in a conversation with the news agency Vremya N, the new subject corresponds to "the spirit of the times" and will be studied alongside world history and the history of Russia.
According to him, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the historical processes that took place in the Nizhny Novgorod region and to trace how the region fits into the all-Russian context.
"Undoubtedly, the discipline will help students of the Nizhny Novgorod region broaden their worldview and better see the course of the region's development within the framework of Russia's general history," Ginzburg emphasized.
The course will be designed for students in grades 5–7. In fifth grade pupils will study the period from ancient times to the end of the 16th century; in sixth grade, the events of the 17th–19th centuries; and in seventh grade, the region's history in the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Classes will be held once a week.
A special textbook (6+) has been created to implement the program, prepared by lecturers of NIRO's relevant department. The textbook is adapted to the age characteristics of the pupils and covers the key stages of the region's development.
It was previously reported that more than 311,000 new history textbooks were purchased for Nizhny Novgorod schools.
