      Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ranked 28th out of 85 regions of the Russian Federation in the ranking of regions with the highest wages compiled by RIA Novosti. According to experts’ estimates, 27.2% of workers in the region receive wages above the national average when adjusted for regional prices, and another 4.9% have incomes exceeding twice the national average.

      The study is based on data on average monthly wages at large and medium-sized enterprises for the period from April 2024 to April 2025; the comparison figure was adjusted for differences in regional prices.

      Analysts note that the labor market context remains favorable for job seekers. In 2024 the average wage in Russia was 88,000 rubles, 18.3% higher than in 2023. In April 2025 it reached 97,400 rubles, up 15.3% in nominal terms compared with the same period last year. The unemployment rate in June 2025 was 2.2% (a historic low).

      Across the country, the share of workers whose income is above the national average is 32.4%. In 19 regions the figure is higher, while in 15 federal subjects the share of such workers does not reach 15%.

      The leader of the ranking presented by RIA Novosti was the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug: almost two-thirds of those employed there earn more than the national average. Experts attribute this to high incomes from oil and gas extraction combined with relatively moderate prices compared with other northern and remote territories. Next are the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (55.1%), the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — Yugra (52.7%), Magadan Oblast (52.5%) and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (52.3%). The top ten also includes Sakhalin Oblast (49.3%), Moscow (46.3%), Saint Petersburg (44.9%), the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (43.5%) and Murmansk Oblast (39.4%).

      Recall that Nizhny Novgorod Oblast entered the top 10 by number of people earning more than one million rubles. There are 468 such people in the region.
