Home internet in Nizhny Novgorod has become a luxury: new connections won't be available until at least autumn.

      Due to persistent mobile internet outages, residents of Nizhny Novgorod are switching en masse to home internet — and are encountering new problems. Now, to have wired internet installed in an apartment, one has to wait for weeks, and in some districts — until the end of September. Why providers are unable to cope with the load is explained in the article by "Zhivem v Nizhnem."

      New reality

      Previously, a technician could be called the next day. Now, however, due to the huge number of requests, that option has become unavailable. National media note that residents of Nizhny Novgorod have become leaders in the growth of demand for home internet connections.

      "Vedomosti," citing the tariff comparison service 101internet.ru, writes that 142 delayed internet access installations have been recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This is a record figure for the country.

      Same-day service is out of the question

      We contacted the support services of providers operating in Nizhny Novgorod and found out how long one has to wait for installation. An operator at one of the largest Russian telecommunications companies said that the wait for installation would be until roughly mid-September, that is about a month. "Everyone has started connecting home internet, there are a lot of requests, the technicians are all booked," the operator said.

      The support service of another company named more pleasant terms — one to two weeks. But even in that case, connecting in a couple of days is not on the table, since the provider has so many requests that the technicians cannot keep up.

      Continuing conversations with other companies, we learned that offers for urgent home internet installation can still be found. An operator at one of the federal telecommunications companies said there is an available slot in three days.

      The hardest hit in terms of waiting for home internet are residents of the Kstovo district, which recently became part of Nizhny Novgorod. Those living in suburban cottage settlements have to wait especially long. The wait is weeks.

      For example, two providers that offer home internet services in Malaya Yelna suggested waiting for connection until the end of September — beginning of October. As local residents told us, in May this service was provided within a few working days.
