In Russia, the number of cases of password theft via Wi-Fi has significantly increased. Malicious actors use QR codes to connect devices to the internet, allowing them to access users' personal data, reports the "360" TV channel.

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs warns citizens about a new fraud scheme. Perpetrators create the illusion of free Wi-Fi access in public places such as cafes, shopping malls, and other popular locations. Users, aiming to save on internet traffic, connect to the offered network without considering potential risks.

However, there is a malicious plan behind this: immediately after connecting, the device becomes infected with malware. The malware can redirect the user to a fake website, where attackers collect login credentials and passwords for various services.

The Ministry emphasized that such a method of internet connection could lead to unauthorized collection of confidential information. To avoid such situations, it is recommended to use only verified and secure networks and not to click on links from unfamiliar sites.

As previously reported, Governor Gleb Nikitin called on Nizhny Novgorod shopping centers to organize free Wi-Fi for visitors and install wired internet for cash register operations.
