The "Shalyapin. Birth of an Artist" Festival will take place in Nizhny Novgorod in August.

      PosterIn August, the "Reserved Quarters" in Nizhny Novgorod will once again become a venue for a vibrant cultural program. From August 21 to 24, the fifth festival "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" (6+) will be held here, dedicated to the creative journey of the great opera singer.

      The festival will tell about Shalyapin's development as an artist — from a young chorister in a church choir to a world-renowned star of the Metropolitan Opera stage. The program includes lectures about the maestro's life and work, acting masterclasses for children, seminars for educators, musical performances, as well as performances by opera soloists and choir ensembles.

      As noted by Ekaterina Krjunas, General Director of ANO "ASIRIS," the festival continues the reinterpretation of Shalyapin's cultural heritage and transforms the Trosvyatsky Quarter.

      "It was here, on the balcony of Gorky's house, that he used to sing for the residents of Nizhny Novgorod, and today we are recreating this living tradition through open-air concerts, performances, and lectures," she said.

      This year, viewers will be presented with a documentary performance "Windows into the Artist's Life" and a concert by a Mariinsky Theatre soloist. In addition, throughout August, cultural events will take place in the "Reserved Quarters":

      August 3, 10, and 17 at 6:30 PM — musical evenings "Romances in the Garden" (12+), where Svetlana Polzikova and Olga Valentinova will perform vintage romances on guitar and piano;

      August 6 and 13 at 6:30 PM — masterclasses "Collage Stories in the Reserved Quarters" (12+), led by artist Julianna Kuluurgur;

      August 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 6:30 PM — jazz concerts "Solo in the Garden" (12+), curated by pianist and conservatory teacher Vyacheslav Zolotovsky.

      The "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" festival has been held since 2021, including iconic venues — for example, the balcony of a house on Korolenko Street 11, where Maxim Gorky lived at the beginning of the 20th century. In 2025, the festival is organized with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.

      The "Reserved Quarters" project of ANO "ASIRIS" aims to preserve the historic environment of Nizhny Novgorod. It features a complex of 28 wooden houses, where Gorky, Korolenko, Chekhov, and Shalyapin lived and visited at different times.

      It was previously announced that the concept of celebrating (0+) the 804th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod has been developed. The event will be united by the theme "Heroes Among Us."
