      In the first half of 2025, police officers in the Nizhny Novgorod region detained 252 drivers for being under the influence of alcohol, thanks to citizen reports to the 112 emergency number. Of these, 38 were caught repeat offenders. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure.

      Approximately half of the suspicions reported by callers were confirmed. After receiving a report, the nearest traffic police patrol checks the vehicle. If the violation is confirmed, the informant receives a monetary reward of 5,000 rubles. The payment is made within 10 days.

      Residents of the region can report drunk drivers directly to the police or via the 112 number. This initiative helps promptly respond to potential road hazards.

      According to the traffic police department of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the number of road traffic accidents caused by intoxicated drivers increased by 7.6% — from 158 to 170 cases compared to the same period in 2024.

      The number of victims in such accidents also grew — from 240 to 268 people, an increase of 11.7%. Meanwhile, the number of fatalities decreased: 31 people compared to 35 a year earlier.

      The traffic police note that active civic engagement by residents plays an important role in ensuring road safety and helps identify violators in a timely manner.

      It was previously reported that from January to July 2025, the State Traffic Inspectorate in the Nizhny Novgorod region held 5,919 drivers accountable for operating vehicles with signs of intoxication.
