      Surgeons from Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow fought for the baby's health

      A highly challenging operation was carried out on a newborn with a congenital heart defect at the Nizhny Novgorod Cardio Center, saving his life. Only a small number of specialized clinics in the country perform such surgical interventions. This was reported by the regional government’s press service.

      The surgery was planned, as the pathology was detected in the fetus at 20 weeks of pregnancy during a maternal ultrasound screening. Alongside local doctors, specialists from Moscow’s Bakulev National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery fought for the baby's health.

      Anton Maksimov, chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Cardio Center, explained that the operation required a complete stop of the newborn’s heart and lungs. The baby was connected to a heart-lung machine, and specialized solutions supplied the heart. “Previously, such pathologies in newborns were incompatible with life, but now we know how to save these children,” emphasized Maksimov.

      Twelve days after the surgery, the child is in stable condition. The newborn was transferred from intensive care to a therapeutic ward with his mother. He is actively gaining weight and recovering after the surgery.

      This result was achieved thanks to the coordinated work of specialists from the moment of diagnosing the pathology during pregnancy until the completion of the operation.
