Yuriy Shalabaev: We approach courtyard repairs comprehensively

This year, 275 areas are being improved in Nizhny Novgorod, which is 54 more than last year.

The head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, assessed the progress of the repair campaign for courtyard areas, which will be comprehensively beautified this year. The mayor visited the yards on Zhukova Street, 16, and Gagarina Avenue, 200, in the Prioksky district. The work on these territories has already been completed. Accompanying him were district head Mikhail Shatilov, City Duma deputy Vladimir Poddymnikov-Gordeev, and local residents.

As the mayor reminded, this year 275 territories are being renovated in Nizhny Novgorod, 54 more than last year, and nearly ten times more than 5–6 years ago. "In the past, work on courtyards was carried out separately by each owner, but now a comprehensive approach is used. The work is conducted jointly by all interested structures: the district, DUK or TSK, city departments of transport and road management, housing, and engineering infrastructure. Despite tight deadlines and large volumes of work across the city, the improvement of courtyard territories in Nizhny Novgorod is proceeding on schedule," said Yuri Shalabaev.

The city head mentioned that the comprehensive repair includes asphalt paving of roads and sidewalks, installation of curbstones, and creation of parking bays.

"When the houses were built, yards were definitely not designed for so many cars. Now, this leads residents to park on green areas and lawns. In autumn and spring, this results in dirt, and in winter, there are issues with snow removal. As part of the comprehensive beautification, with residents' approval, we create parking spaces in the yards to ensure comfort for both drivers and pedestrians," explained Yuri Shalabaev, noting that responsible structures monitor the progress of the work and inform residents about it.

According to Andrew Zhitnikov, director of the city department of transport and road management, two municipal driveways are being constructed in Prioksky district under the department’s line—on Gagarina Avenue, 180, and Arsenyev Street, 2.

"On Gagarina Avenue, work is 80% complete, with 2,034 square meters of road laid and curbstones installed. On Arsenyev Street, work is fully completed, with 580 square meters of driveway and 247 square meters of sidewalk asphalted. Overall, 40 driveways are being built across the city. Work on all sites is planned to be finished by September," said Andrew Zhitnikov.

Prioksky district head Mikhail Shatilov reported that 17 courtyard territories are being repaired this year in the district.

"We are widening the roads in the yards everywhere. We are making them convenient for car owners so they can park peacefully without disturbing pedestrians. Also, wide roads are easy to clear mechanically during winter. All work will be completed on time," emphasized the district leader.

Residents have already appreciated the repair work. Elena, a local resident, said that the yard has transformed significantly. "Finally, the holes that caused discomfort are gone. It was very inconvenient to walk and drive, and even pushing strollers was difficult. Now everything is very clean, and everything was done professionally."

Neighbor Yulia supported her. "The area has changed. It has become very easy to walk with a stroller and go for a walk. And there's a place to park the car. Our yard is clean and orderly. Thanks to everyone for the work done. I want to say that now all yards are being done beautifully."

City Duma deputy Vladimir Poddymnikov-Gordeev, who participated in the inspection, noted that one of the pressing issues raised by Prioksky residents is yard repairs.

"An excellent example is this yard on Zhukova Street, 16, where improvement work was carried out with regard to all residents' wishes, including a parking lot, a large play area for children, and landscaping. Overall, this yard could become a standard for future public spaces that will be improved in Prioksky district."

Earlier, city head Yuri Shalabaev announced that nearly one billion rubles would be allocated for renovating 275 territories in Nizhny Novgorod—such a volume of work would be completed for the first time.
