With the widespread development of technology, the number of fraud cases is growing each year. Every week, residents of Nizhny Novgorod transfer tens of millions of rubles to scammers who use increasingly sophisticated schemes. In 2024, the damage from remote thefts and frauds in the region exceeded 2 billion rubles, and the total stolen funds across the country amounted to 27.5 billion rubles.

Deputy Minister of Finance of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Natalia Nikiforova, reminded citizens of the importance of financial literacy during a seminar at NOIC on July 15, attended by a correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod."

Main signs that you are being contacted by scammers:

      - You are not the initiator of the contact. Scammers usually try to make first contact—they call, send an email message, or contact through messengers.

      - They try to evoke emotional reactions. Strong emotions are the main enemy of rational thinking. Scammers aim to intimidate and disturb the victim’s composure.

      - They pressurize and rush you. Scammers constantly create urgency and set deadlines so that the victim doesn't have time to analyze the situation.

      - They prohibit you from contacting third parties. The scammers want to prevent potential victims from communicating with family or genuine representatives of banks, law enforcement, and other authorities, so you don’t discover the scam.

      - They ask for personal information. Scammers always request some personal data: from a code in an SMS that should not be shared, to information from "Gosuslugi."

It’s important to remember that new scam schemes appear regularly. Previously, the most common scam involved a phone call from a relative involved in a car accident; now, scammers impersonate police officers, bank employees, and mobile operators, offering pensions recalculation to elderly citizens, or telling job seekers about quick earnings. Additionally, there has been an increase in scams using deepfakes—videos and voice calls generated by artificial intelligence, supposedly from colleagues, friends, or family members.

In Nizhny Novgorod, scammers frequently create fake accounts of deputies, ministers, the mayor, and the governor. Interestingly, scammers have even used neural networks to generate video footage of an airplane crash, faking the speech of Gleb Nikitin.

What to do if you become a victim of scammers?

      - Immediately block your card, account, or profile.

      - Save all evidence (conversations, screenshots of transfers or payments, phone numbers).

      - Contact your bank or support service.

      - Report the incident to law enforcement agencies (via branch, the Ministry of Internal Affairs website, or "Gosuslugi").

Anyone can become a victim, even the most informed. Therefore, it’s essential to stay vigilant and not disclose personal information online or over the phone.
