To the Railway Workers' Day (according to the documents of GOPANO)

      On the first Sunday of August, Russia celebrates Railway Workers' Day. The traditions of the holiday date back to the late 19th century, a time of rapid railway construction in the Russian Empire. Railway construction in the Nizhny Novgorod region began in the 1860s when Nizhny Novgorod was connected by rail to Moscow. Shortly before the start of World War I, a branch from Nizhny Novgorod to Kotel'nich was laid. However, due to the war, the plan for railway development in the northern part of the region was halted. During the October Revolution and the Civil War, the railways in the Nizhny Novgorod region were in a deplorable state. Railway workers had to independently gather fuel supplies. Despite the extremely difficult situation, the construction of new transport routes continued. In the early 1920s, the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod–Kotel'nich branch was resumed. This construction was given great importance. As noted at the I Line Party Conference of the Nizhny Novgorod–Kotel'nich railway line, "The road is destined to play a colossal role in the economic life of the country." To improve the quality of railway work, workers took on social obligations for the repair and introduction of railway tracks and locomotives. For example, in 1930, railway workers from Murom managed to repair E-13 locomotives five times faster than their colleagues from Poltava. In the 1930s, with the introduction of a railway bridge over the Volga, a more convenient route connecting the center of the country with the Urals was created. In 1936, a new railway management was established with its administrative center in Gorky. The Gorky region became a major railway hub. Railway workers of the Gorky railway management made a significant contribution to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on the front and in the rear, as well as in the post-war development of the USSR. In 1942, railway workers repaired more than two thousand cars beyond the plan. In 1942, with the efforts of Murom and Gorky railway workers, funds were raised, and armored trains "Ilya Muromets" and "Kozma Minin" were built, and a total of four armored trains were constructed by the Gorky workers during the war years. Protocols of party meetings of railway sections in the region, materials from meetings on the development of railway transport, and lists of responsible party workers of the railway for the years 1920-1930 are stored in the funds of the Nizhny Novgorod regional committee of the RCP(b)-VKP(b) and the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) regional committee of the VKP(b) at the State Public-Political Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The personal file of Leonid Ivanovich Matyukhin, the head of the Gorky railway from 1986 to 1991, the last Minister of Transport of the USSR, is preserved in the fund of the Gorky regional committee of the CPSU.
