Patriarch Kirill called the creation of a nuclear bomb in Sarov a divine mercy.

      On August 1, 2026, 17:52 Society Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus' Kirill stated that the creation of nuclear weapons in Sarov was an important event in the history of the country and is connected, according to him, with the spiritual significance of this place. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church spoke about this after the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as reported by NTV.

      The Patriarch emphasized that it was in Sarov that Soviet scientists and engineers created nuclear weapons, which, as he noted, played a role in ensuring the country's security. He called this work a manifestation of "God's grace and mercy."

      "It is not by chance that these scientific works took place in this place, which saved our people and country from the most terrible and dangerous destruction," said Patriarch Kirill.

      He also spoke about meetings with physicists who work on ensuring the security of Russia. According to him, many of them are Orthodox and believe that the creation of nuclear weapons in Sarov was connected not only with scientific achievements but also with the prayers of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

      "In conversations with them, I understood that they fully realize the fact that the creation of formidable weapons in our country in this place was not a coincidence, that all this took place also through the prayers of St. Seraphim of Sarov," noted the Patriarch.

      Today, August 1, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of the Discovery of the Relics of Seraphim of Sarov. The saint was a resident of the Sarov Monastery, which was closed during the Soviet years.
