      July 26, 2026 11:15 Society In the first six months of 2026, the Nizhny Novgorod region has seen a significant decrease in the number of traffic accidents involving intoxicated drivers. According to the regional State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, the number of such incidents has decreased by 47.3%, from 188 to 99. The number of fatalities has decreased by 66.7%, from 39 to 13, and the number of injured has decreased by 51.7%, from 267 to 129. Since the beginning of the year, traffic police have held accountable 5,739 drivers who were operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Of these, 5,062 were found to be intoxicated, 2,100 refused to undergo a medical examination, and 677 drove while intoxicated again after already being deprived of their driving rights. The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate reminds that driving a vehicle while intoxicated is punishable by a fine of 45,000 rubles and deprivation of rights for a period of 1.5 to 2 years. A repeated violation may lead to criminal liability under Article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including imprisonment and confiscation of the vehicle. The agency reported that on July 27, an informational and promotional event called "Sober Driver" will take place in the Nizhny Novgorod region. As part of the event, State Traffic Safety Inspectorate employees will conduct preventive talks with drivers about the dangers of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Any citizen can report an intoxicated driver to the traffic police by calling 112. Upon confirmation of the violation, the informant will receive a reward of 5,000 rubles.
