Nizhny Novgorod surgeons removed a giant thyroid tumor from a patient.
On July 26, 2026, at 12:20, Society Endocrine surgeons in Nizhny Novgorod performed a unique operation to remove a thyroid gland affected by a tumor the size of a grapefruit. Thanks to the skill of the doctors and modern technologies, the patient was able to preserve her voice and avoid complications. This was reported by the editor-in-chief of MIA "Stacionar-Press," Alexey Nikonov.
The woman had long been unaware of health problems. She attributed weakness, shortness of breath, and rapid heartbeat during stress to ordinary fatigue.
After examination, doctors discovered that the patient's thyroid gland had transformed into a solid mass of tumors and had grown to gigantic sizes—over 300 cubic centimeters (normal is about 18 cubic centimeters). The tumor was compressing the trachea and causing hormonal imbalance.
To remove the thyroid gland, doctors used an organ-preserving technique. This minimized the risks of damaging the laryngeal nerves and preserved the patient's voice. The parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium levels in the body, were also preserved.
A key role in the successful operation was played by neuromonitoring. This technology allowed surgeons to monitor nerve function in real-time and avoid damage.
For the operation, doctors used minimally invasive access, absorbable sutures, and surgical glue. This allowed them to avoid rough stitches and shorten the patient's recovery time—she was discharged from the hospital the very next day after the operation.
Nikonov reminded that to timely detect thyroid problems, it is recommended to regularly undergo check-ups. This includes an ultrasound of the thyroid gland and a blood test for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Early diagnosis and treatment can help avoid serious complications and maintain health.
