Nine people will judge a group for insurance fraud in Nizhny Novgorod.

      On July 22, 2026, at 15:18, incidents in the Nizhny Novgorod region have concluded the investigation of a criminal case against members of an organized group accused of insurance fraud. The materials have been submitted to the Kanavinsky District Court, reported the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region.

      According to the investigation, the accused staged fictitious traffic accidents and then contacted insurance companies for compensation. They provided false information about the circumstances of the accidents to obtain insurance payments.

      The group operated from late November 2019 to September 2022. During this time, its members, in various compositions, committed 24 serious crimes in the territory of Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      Investigators believe that in this way, the accused illegally obtained more than 8.5 million rubles. They distributed this money among themselves and spent it on personal needs, causing insurance organizations damage in the specified amount.

      According to law enforcement, two alleged organizers purchased cars for staged accidents and found drivers to whom these cars were registered. Most often, "Gazelles," "GAZ" vehicles, and other cargo transport were used as "culprits." They also assigned roles among participants and coordinated their actions.

      Another 24 people were involved in the scheme. A criminal case against these individuals was sent to court earlier.

      Nine individuals are accused under part 4 of Article 159.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – fraud in the field of insurance committed by an organized group or on a particularly large scale. The maximum penalty under this article is up to ten years of imprisonment and a fine of up to one million rubles.

      In addition, a criminal case against one of the alleged accomplices, separated into a separate proceeding, has also been sent to court.
