"High and scary": tourists stuck on the Nizhny Novgorod cable car gave an interview

      On July 7, 2026, at 09:50, Incidents: An emergency occurred on the cable car connecting Nizhny Novgorod with Bor on the evening of July 5 due to hurricane winds. Several cabins with a total mass stopped directly over the river. Among the passengers were tourists from the Belgorod region who had come to the area for a vacation. Participants in the events told the program "By the Way" (16+) that they set out for a walk to Bor. They decided to return to Nizhny by cable car. However, shortly after departure, a thunderstorm with strong winds and heavy rain began.

      The cabin shook violently. Thunder roared, and the wind was very strong. We hung over the river and did not understand what would happen next, one of the passengers recounted.

      At one point, the woman seriously thought about the possibility of falling into the water. Eight people were in one of the cabins—six adults and two children. The passengers tried to remain calm so as not to scare the children, but they admitted: the fear was strong. The cabins were shaking violently, and people feared they might be torn away.

      When the storm began to subside, the movement of the cable car partially resumed. Soon it became known that several cabins had collided with each other. According to the passengers, one of them had allegedly not seated properly on the roller and had jammed against the structure, causing the movement to stop again. As a result, people hung over the building and the river.

      In total, the passengers spent about four hours waiting for help. Rescuers began the evacuation from the first cabin, where six people were located. One of the emergency service employees reached the stranded passengers by rope, using safety equipment. He climbed onto the roof of the cabin, opened the door, and began to lower people down one by one.

      The evacuation was carried out using the attachments provided for such cases. Passengers were lowered on safety lines from a great height. According to eyewitnesses, this was the most tense moment: "I closed my eyes and went down. It was very high and scary."

      As a result of the emergency, no one was injured. The passengers hope that after what happened, safety measures will be reviewed.
