      July 1, 2026 12:12 Culture and Leisure The concept of the new opera theater on the Rowing Canal is still being refined by specialists. This was reported by the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" from the ANO "Center 800." The cultural institution, designed for approximately a hundred spectators, is intended to be located between the Nizhnevolzhskaya embankment and the Rowing Canal. Previously, the design was planned to be completed in April of this year, and the actual construction was set for 2029. The concept is being developed by the architectural bureau "SPICH" on behalf of ANO "Center 800." In 2024, the project was estimated at about 15 billion rubles, but the final amount will depend on the characteristics of the building. It should be noted that this idea has been discussed in the Nizhny Novgorod region since 2006. Initially, it was assumed that the design would start in 2007, and construction would begin in 2008. At that time, the cost of the work was estimated at about one billion rubles. However, due to the complex economic situation, the implementation of the project has been postponed multiple times. Additional difficulties arose at the documentation preparation stage: the designer made several mistakes and did not voluntarily correct them. In February 2015, the Arbitration Court satisfied the claim of the regional Ministry of Construction, obliging the specialist to rectify the identified violations. Initially, Pushkin Park was considered as the site. In 2011, the authorities allocated 30 million rubles to buy out the "Onegin" restaurant on the proposed territory. The initiative caused a stir: some residents and deputies opposed the construction within the boundaries of the natural and cultural monument due to the possible felling of trees. In 2019, regional authorities returned to discussing the project. The possibilities of attracting federal funding were considered, and the search for an alternative land plot for the theater construction was resumed. In January 2023, it was reported that work was underway to resolve property issues on several plots potentially suitable for the new building. After this procedure is completed, it is planned to bring the issue to the architectural council, determine the specific site, and announce an architectural competition.
