However, as warned by the head of the ophthalmology department of the Podolsk Regional Clinical Hospital, Alexey Egorov, in some cases their use can be dangerous. In an interview with 360.ru, the doctor noted that contact lenses do not pose a health threat if the rules for wearing them are followed. Nevertheless, there are situations where their use is categorically contraindicated. For example, in cases of inflammatory eye diseases or damage to the corneal epithelium. Egorov also commented on information from social media that amoebas can penetrate under the lenses. He confirmed that this is indeed the case, but such instances are rare. The doctor emphasized that one should not swim while wearing contact lenses, especially in stagnant water bodies, as microorganisms such as Acanthamoeba can proliferate there. Acanthamoeba keratitis is a severe infectious eye disease caused by amoebas of the Acanthamoeba genus. It can lead to serious consequences, such as irreversible vision deterioration, corneal perforation, and even loss of sight. To prevent Acanthamoeba infection, Egorov recommended removing lenses before swimming in water bodies and immediately rinsing the eyes with a special antiseptic solution after coming out of the water.
