Two cases of tick-borne viral encephalitis have been identified in Nizhny Novgorod residents.
On June 26, 2026, at 16:10, Society reported that since the beginning of the season, two cases of tick-borne viral encephalitis have been identified among unvaccinated adult residents of Nizhny Novgorod in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The infections occurred after bites in the Gorodetsky and Vetluzhsky districts, and the ticks were not examined. Data as of June 22 was published by the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor.
Additionally, 18 cases of Ixodes tick-borne borreliosis have been confirmed in residents of Nizhny Novgorod, Shakhunya, as well as in the Tonkinsky, Balakhnin, Vetluzhsky, Semyonovsky, and Sosnovsky districts. In 94% of cases, the infection occurred within the region. All diagnoses have been confirmed in the laboratory.
A total of 4,420 people have sought medical assistance regarding tick bites, including 1,225 children. Requests have been recorded in 49 municipalities and eight districts of Nizhny Novgorod. Most often, residents sought help in Dzerzhinsk (269 cases), Bor (259), Pavlovsky district (259), and Vetluzhsky district (229). Among the districts of Nizhny Novgorod, the leaders are Priokskiy (301 cases), Soviet (238), and Avtozavodsky (219).
More than a third of the bites—36%—occurred in household areas and garden plots. In the forest, 16% of cases were registered, and in parks and squares—10.5%. Episodes of tick bites outside the region have also been noted.
Laboratories have examined 5,842 ticks, of which 5,531 were removed from people. Pathogens of infections were found in 19.4% of samples. Specifically, 12 ticks (0.2%) were infected with the encephalitis virus, 906 (18.9%) with borreliae, 29 (0.7%) with ehrlichiae, and 191 (4.8%) with anaplasmas.
Emergency prophylaxis with immunoglobulin was administered to 703 people, including 684 children.
