Nizhny Novgorod residents were reminded about fines for improper burial of pets.

      On June 22, 2026, 10:50 Society From March 1, 2025, new rules regarding the disposal of deceased pets came into effect in Russia. According to the legislation, the bodies of pets are classified as biological waste, and their burial on private property, in forests, or on garden plots is prohibited. Violations of these rules are subject to fines. Expert in the field of law, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the Financial University, Marina Pronina, explained in an interview with 360.ru that for the proper disposal of an animal's body, one must contact the veterinary service. Independent burial can lead to soil contamination and other environmental problems, especially if the owner does not consider possible consequences, such as the direction of groundwater. Violating veterinary and sanitary norms results in fines: for individuals - from 4,000 to 5,000 rubles, for officials - from 20,000 to 40,000 rubles, for individual entrepreneurs - from 40,000 to 50,000 rubles, or suspension of activities for up to 90 days. Legal entities can be fined up to 700,000 rubles. Veterinary services usually offer two types of cremation: communal and individual. In individual cremation, the ashes of the animal are returned to the owner. After that, the urn with the ashes can only be buried in specially designated places, and under no circumstances should a pet's grave be arranged on one's own property, in the yard, or in a forest strip.
