An elderly woman from Nizhny Novgorod lost almost 5 million rubles due to a "pension recalculation."

June 18, 2026 19:00 Incidents An 80-year-old resident of Bor became a victim of fraud and lost almost five million rubles. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region. According to preliminary data, at the end of April, an unknown person called the woman, introducing himself as an employee of the Bor Governor's College. He informed her about a recalculation of her pension. Later, pseudo-law enforcement officers and "representatives of the Central Bank" joined the conversation. The pensioner was convinced that 600,000 rubles had allegedly been transferred from her bank card to an account of a foreigner. The callers claimed that she faced charges of aiding another state and offered their "assistance." Following the instructions, the woman went to the bank and withdrew all her savings—4,615,000 rubles. She packed the money and handed it over to an unknown courier at the designated location, supposedly to ensure the safety of her savings. A criminal case has been initiated under part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud committed by an organized group or on a particularly large scale). Police officers are conducting operational search activities to identify individuals involved in the crime, who face up to ten years in prison. Earlier, we reported that banks and communication operators were required to compensate victims of fraud. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
