Trichologist Varenova warned Nizhny Novgorod residents about hairstyles that are harmful to hair.

June 6, 2026 11:02 Society In summer, hair experiences additional stress due to the effects of the sun and dry air. As trichologist Tatyana Varenova told the MAX channel "Bokal Presseka," some popular hairstyles can worsen the condition of the strands. The specialist named five styling options that can lead to brittleness, split ends, and even hair loss during the hot season.

In first place is a tight high ponytail. According to the doctor, under the influence of sunlight, hair loses elasticity, and strong tension from the hair tie can contribute to damage. Additionally, constant pressure at the roots negatively affects blood circulation and increases the risk of hair loss.

Also included in the list are afro braids and small braids. Heavy artificial strands create additional stress on the roots, and exposed scalp in parting areas can easily get sunburned. As a result, peeling and increased hair loss may occur after some time.

The specialist also identified the dangerous habit of staying on the beach with loose wet hair. In this state, hair is more easily stretched and damaged. Furthermore, water on the strands intensifies the effects of ultraviolet light, which contributes to moisture and pigment loss. Combined with wind, this can lead to tangling and deterioration of hair condition.

The specialist also advises against wearing a straight part without a head covering. The skin in this area is practically unprotected from the sun, quickly burns, and can cause discomfort.

Finally, a bun with metal hairpins and bobby pins. In the sun, metal heats up quickly and can damage hair at the points of contact, making it more brittle.

The golden rule of summer trichology: the less tension and the better the ends of the hair are protected from direct sunlight, the healthier your mane will be by autumn, advised Tatyana Varenova.
