Nizhny Novgorod police stopped illegal activities related to the sale of unmarked tobacco products.

      On May 14, 2026, employees of the 3rd department of the Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Unit of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, together with the Investigative Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, stopped the illegal turnover of unmarked tobacco products on a large scale. Based on the signs of a crime provided for in paragraph "a" of part 6 of article 171.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (production, acquisition, storage, transportation, or sale of goods and products without marking and/or application of information provided for by the legislation of the Russian Federation), investigators from the investigative department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region initiated a criminal case. It has been preliminarily established that a 68-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod organized the sale of unmarked tobacco products at three trading locations located on Komsomolskoye Highway in the regional center. Nearby, he rented a warehouse where he stored the tobacco products. During the search operations in non-residential premises, mobile phones, invoices, rough notes, and 49,946 packs of unmarked tobacco products were seized. The value of the seized products amounts to 7,641,000 rubles. The man has been charged and a preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave has been chosen. Currently, activities and investigative actions are planned to establish additional episodes and to identify accomplices in the criminal activity. The investigation is ongoing. According to the legislation, the punishment for committing such a crime is imprisonment for up to 6 years with a significant fine.
