Nine Nizhny Novgorod residents died from surrogate alcohol in 2025.

      On May 29, 2026, 11:12 Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, nine deaths from the toxic effects of alcohol were registered in 2025. All fatal cases were associated with the consumption of surrogates, including methanol and other unspecified alcoholic liquids. This is stated in the report of the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor. According to the agency, a total of 170 cases of alcohol poisoning were recorded in the region over the year. A year earlier, there were 146. More than half of the episodes in 2025—95 cases, or 55.9%—were due to poisoning with surrogate alcohol. The office supervises 7,106 entities selling alcoholic products. In 2025, specialists conducted inspections at 350 alcohol retail outlets. Violations of storage conditions and expiration dates were identified at six of them. Three legal entities and two officials were brought to administrative responsibility, with a total fine amounting to 525,000 rubles. A total of 254 samples of alcoholic products were also tested, including seven imported ones. One sample of beer did not meet the standards for microbiological indicators. For comparison, in 2024, 287 samples were tested, and all of them met the requirements. Earlier, Governor Gleb Nikitin reported that alcohol consumption in the region decreased by 14.6% over the past year. On average, the decrease across the country was 5%.
