The railway in the Volga region will be protected from floods through digital monitoring.
Digital flood monitoring will be implemented on railway tracks. The corresponding agreement was signed by MTS and the Gorky Railway at the "CIPR-2026" conference in Nizhny Novgorod. The agreement provides for the introduction of an automated system that will allow for round-the-clock monitoring of water levels in potentially hazardous areas and promptly alert railway employees about the risk of flooding.
As representatives of MTS explained, the system is based on a network of remote sensors, which also operate on solar batteries. The equipment is installed along the railway infrastructure—on bridges, riverbank supports, and other facilities—and monitors the condition of the soil as well as the water levels in rivers, canals, lakes, and other bodies of water in real time. The sensors can transmit data via GSM communication channels in less than a minute after parameter changes. All information will be sent to the Infrastructure Management Center of the Gorky Railway, where specialists can quickly assess risks and make decisions.
The head of the Gorky Railway, Sergey Dorofeyevsky, emphasized that the system is particularly important for regions where the railway infrastructure regularly faces the consequences of floods and heavy precipitation. For example, this year in the Mari El Republic, a high rise in the river was recorded, which overflowed onto the tracks. At that time, everything had to be regulated manually.

"The Gorky Railway is present in 15 regions of Russia. It is important for us to collect this information because we have bridges, embankments, and contact networks along the tracks. We need to understand how floodwaters affect the infrastructure," he stated. According to Oleg Aldoshin, Vice President for Corporate Business at MTS, the system will be used year-round, as threats to the railway come not only from spring floods but also from heavy rains, storms, and sharp rises in water levels throughout the year.
In addition to the flood monitoring system, the partnership provides for the implementation of environmental monitoring of wastewater. It is planned to monitor the hydrochemical composition of discharges and reduce the risk of water pollution. The project will become part of the "RZD" Environmental Strategy until 2030.
In the future, the companies also plan to develop cooperation in the field of communication infrastructure and equipment monitoring on railway tracks. It is expected that this will enhance the reliability of data transmission, allow for quicker identification of malfunctions, and minimize the risks of emergency situations on the transport network.
