Shalabaev reported an improvement in the situation with the sewage odor.
On April 28, 2026, at 12:50, Society The Mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, stated at a city council meeting that the situation with the sewage odor, which has plagued residents for years, has improved. According to him, the effect was achieved through the first phase of the reconstruction of the aeration station, completed in 2025. This was reported by a correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod."
"I can't say that the odor issues are completely resolved—there will be a second phase of reconstruction, which will also focus on the odors to prevent their occurrence. Nevertheless, there is already a result," said Shalabaev.
He emphasized that the aeration station is the largest wastewater treatment facility in the region. As part of the first phase, almost half of all structures were updated. Ahead is the second phase, where the issue of odors will also be addressed.
The city head also reported on the state of the communal infrastructure. In 2025, 145 km of communications were replaced in Nizhny Novgorod: 125 km of heating supply networks and almost 20 km of water supply and sewage networks. The construction of three automated boiler houses on Bolshie Ovragi, Dalnyaya, and Ukrainian streets was also completed. This improved the reliability and quality of heating supply for residential buildings and social facilities, as well as created opportunities for connecting new consumers.
The city also completed the first phase of the construction of main networks in the villages of Olgino and Novinki. Nine kilometers of water supply networks were laid.
"This not only reduced the load on the existing networks but also, in the long term, will solve the tasks of providing water supply to actively developed adjacent territories. Currently, activities for the second phase have begun, which includes the construction of another 16 km of sewage networks and the construction of two pumping stations," said Yuri Shalabaev.
Recall that the contract for the reconstruction of the aeration station was signed in 2022 with "RosKapStroy." Currently, the first phase has been completed with almost a year delay. The joint-stock company "OKO," which is the customer of the work, stated that they do not want to continue working with this contractor and intend to terminate the contract unilaterally.
It was also previously reported that the modernization of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station is planned to be completed by 2030. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
