New landslides have begun near Nizhny Novgorod: what the authorities are saying

On April 22, 2026, at 15:05, Society reported that new landslides have begun in the village of Karauolovo in the Kstovo district, according to the program "By the Way" (16+).

The settlement started sinking six years ago when two uninhabited houses collapsed into a ravine. In 2021, three more houses, including residential ones, collapsed. Soon after, a state of emergency was declared in the village. Studies were conducted, during which specialists identified groundwater at a depth of 8 meters. However, the cause was not determined.

Then, ground movements occurred in 2024. The year 2025 passed without incidents, as the winter was low in snowfall. However, this year has set a record for precipitation, and landslides have begun with renewed force.

"The ground is sinking. Every day it goes lower, dropping like in an elevator," a villager complained to journalists.

According to locals, a water pipe was damaged as a result of the new landslide — people have been without water for several days, as noted in the program. They fear that the gas pipe will not survive either.

"We live like on a powder keg," lamented a local resident.

Recently, the Kstovo district has become part of the urban district of Nizhny Novgorod. Therefore, we reached out to the city administration for a comment. They stated that monitoring of the landslide process in Karauolovo has been ongoing since 2020. Since then, there have been nine meetings of the district's emergency commissions involving specialists.

A state of emergency is currently in effect. Specialists assessed the technical condition of the ravine, and work has been done to straighten and clear the streambed in the ravine's thalweg. Caps have been installed on the abandoned gas pipelines. Additionally, utility workers have replaced 200 meters of water pipe to prevent water supply interruptions.

Also, from the response to the request from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod," it follows that residents of the village whose houses are in the landslide zone were offered to move to a temporary housing fund in 2025-2026. However, they did not want to. At the same time, owners of five residential houses and plots that fell into the emergency zone were offered a buyout and compensation option. This issue is currently being worked on, the city hall clarified.
