Nizhny Novgorod residents will be able to contest the revocation of their driver's licenses due to illness.
April 15, 2026 15:50 Society NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Polina Zubova Starting March 1, 2027, amendments will come into force in Russia that will allow the annulment of driving rights upon the discovery of medical contraindications to driving. This concerns diseases that increase the risk on the road, including severe mental disorders, epilepsy, significant vision problems, and other conditions that can lead to loss of control over the vehicle. Information about identified health violations will be transmitted to the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate after a medical examination. Based on this data, a decision will be made regarding the suspension or annulment of driving licenses. Marina Somova, a member of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Association of Lawyers of Russia and a lawyer, explained in a conversation with NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" that it is unlikely to preempt the imposed administrative ban. However, it is possible and necessary to challenge the decision if the driver disagrees with it. "How exactly the structure and procedure will be established will be shown by time. However, this is no different from other similar cases. I believe that the appeal will take place in an administrative manner. In such a situation, it is important to present evidence that supports and justifies your position if you disagree with the decision made," she noted. The expert emphasized that much will depend on the nature of the disease. There are chronic illnesses that are untreatable. At the same time, there are temporary conditions. After the elimination of such a disease, there may be grounds for the return of driving rights. The communication with the lawyer took place as part of a joint project of the media group NOIC and the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the Association of Lawyers of Russia "So You Know." Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were advised not to engage in a fight after a traffic accident. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
