      On March 30, 2026, at around 08:30, on the 384 km of the M-7 highway (Moscow - Ufa), the senior inspector of the road patrol service of the separate battalion of the traffic police of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region stopped a "DAF" truck for inspection. The driver of the truck showed signs of intoxication but refused to undergo a medical examination. The 58-year-old resident of the Republic of Belarus was removed from driving the vehicle and invited by the traffic police officer to the service vehicle to draw up a protocol under part 1 of article 12.26 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation. During the documentation process, the foreigner persistently offered the traffic police officer a monetary reward for not holding him accountable. As payment for his illegal actions, the man attempted to hand the police officer 280 dollars. The bribe-giver was informed that his request to be released from responsibility was illegal; moreover, he was committing a crime by trying to bribe an official. However, the man persisted and continued his unlawful actions. The police officer refused the illegal reward and reported the incident to the duty unit. A criminal case was initiated by the investigative department for the Avtozavodsky district of Nizhny Novgorod under part 3 of article 30, part 3 of article 291 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempt to bribe an official). An investigation is underway. Additionally, a protocol was drawn up against the offender under part 1 of article 12.26 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation (failure of the driver of the vehicle to comply with the requirement to undergo a medical examination for intoxication). The vehicle was seized by the police and placed in a specialized parking lot. According to the law, for refusing a medical examination, the offending driver may face a fine of forty-five thousand rubles and a driving ban for a period of one and a half to two years. For attempting to bribe a police officer, the penalty ranges from a large fine to one year of imprisonment. The police of the Nizhny Novgorod region remind that bribery is a criminal offense and entails liability under Russian law. A citizen who gives a bribe may be exempt from liability if:

      - it is established that he was extorted;

      - he voluntarily reported the crime to law enforcement or actively contributed to the detection and/or investigation of the crime.

      A statement about giving a bribe cannot be considered voluntary if law enforcement agencies learned about it from other sources.
