29 Nizhny Novgorod municipalities may fall into the flood zone.

      March 23, 2026 13:08 Society The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, held a meeting of the commission for the prevention and elimination of emergencies and ensuring fire safety. Participants focused on issues related to the spring flood and the forecast of fire hazard conditions during the spring-summer period. The meeting was attended by the head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the region, Valery Sinkov, the head of the Upper Volga Hydrometeorological Center, Lyudmila Filina, the Minister of Regional Security, Sergey Razin, as well as representatives of government authorities and local self-government. As Gleb Nikitin noted, an analysis of flood preparedness has been conducted in the region. According to him, a snowy winter and significant precipitation may complicate the hydrological situation. Authorities are already implementing a set of control and preventive measures aimed at preventing emergencies, reducing potential damage, and avoiding loss of life. According to the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations, in 2026, the flood may exceed the long-term average values. 29 municipalities, 18 low-water bridges, and 21 sections of roads are at risk of flooding. Forces and resources have been prepared for the flood-prone period in the region: a grouping of more than 18,000 people and over 4,000 units of equipment has been formed. Evacuation measures are planned in potentially flooded areas, with 429 vehicles, 136 watercraft, and 150 temporary accommodation points prepared. Earlier, a number of preventive works were already carried out in the region, including riverbed clearing, dredging, bank reinforcement, and repair of hydraulic structures. The head of the region recommended that local self-government bodies timely inform residents about the development of the flood situation and the measures being taken. If necessary, the relocation of fire equipment and personnel from municipal and volunteer fire services is provided for. Following the meeting, the commission approved plans for reducing risks and responding to emergencies during the flood-prone period, as well as measures for the prevention and elimination of wildfires. In addition, the composition of the interdepartmental working group, which will be responsible for preparing and supporting the flood period of 2026 in the region, has been clarified. It should be noted that forecasts indicate that the level of spring flooding may exceed long-term average values. This is explained by the large moisture reserve accumulated in the snow cover. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, 141 settlements and 71 sections of roads may be at risk of flooding. It was previously reported that river ice breakup is expected in April in the region.
