      In Nizhny Novgorod, police detained a 23-year-old man who, at the direction of fraudsters, collected and handed over victims’ money and valuables. According to law enforcement agencies, for a week the young man was convinced he was assisting the security forces in conducting operational activities. In reality he was following the instructions of telephone scammers.

      The Nizhny Novgorod resident collected money and valuables from citizens, pawned them, and then transferred the proceeds to various bank accounts. In one episode the man took a safe hidden under a bench; to open it he had earlier purchased an angle grinder. In a rented apartment he opened the safe and found jewelry and five wristwatches. After pawning some of the valuables the man received 470,000 rubles, but he did not have time to transfer the entire sum — he was detained by police officers.

      During a search of his residence, cash, jewelry, the opened safe and the tool were seized. Two victims have already contacted the police, and other possible victims of the fraud scheme are being identified.

      The police of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported that criminal cases have been opened. After the investigative actions are completed, the seized money and valuables will be returned to their lawful owners.
