The film "Buratino" (6+), which was released nationwide on January 1, 2026, has grossed over 1 billion rubles in Russian cinemas in just four days. This is according to data from the Unified Federal Automated Information System (EAIS) of the Cinema Fund.
More than 1.8 million viewers saw the film. The total box office amounted to 1,000,796,617 rubles. Of that amount, presales brought in nearly 184 million rubles, and on the first day of release alone the picture earned over 226 million rubles.
Director Igor Voloshin previously noted that this is not a reshoot of the 1975 Soviet TV film, but a modern adaptation of two classic works — Carlo Collodi's "Pinocchio" and Aleksey Tolstoy's "The Golden Key."
According to Voloshin, the creators sought to preserve the spirit of the original tale while telling it in a way that would be understandable and interesting to today's audiences, including children.
The title role of Buratino was performed using motion-capture technology by young actress Vitaliya Kornienko. Papa Carlo was played by Alexander Yatsenko, Malvina was portrayed by Anastasia Talyzina, Artemon — Nizhny Novgorod native Mark Eidelshtein, Pierrot — Stepan Belozerov, Harlequin — Ruzil Minekaev.
The role of Karabas Barabas was played by one of the film's producers, Fyodor Bondarchuk. Lev Zulkarnayev appeared as Duremar. The Fox Alisa and the cat Basilio were played by Viktoriya Isakova and Alexander Petrov. The turtle Tortilla was brought to life on screen by People's Artist of the RSFSR Svetlana Nemolyaeva.
The film's musical score was entrusted to People's Artist of Russia Alexey Rybnikov — the author of the soundtrack to the 1975 film. Together with his son Dmitry, he updated the old melodies, adapting them to modern sound formats.
The creators paid special attention to the final musical scene. It was filmed over two days after a full rehearsal session with all the performers. The episode involved more than 200 people, including 35 professional dancers. The choreography was devised by Vladimir Varnava.
It was reported that the Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova attended the premiere of "Buratino."
