In Nizhny Novgorod, in his 86th year, Honored Physician of the Russian Federation and neurosurgeon Valery Khomenok has passed away. His name for decades was inextricably linked with the N.A. Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital and the development of high-tech medicine in the region, his colleagues at the Regional Clinical Hospital reported.
Valery Khomenok was born in 1940 in Pinsk, graduated with honors from the Minsk Medical Institute, and devoted almost 50 years of his life to medicine. From 1976 to 1999 he headed the neurosurgery department of the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital, and then continued to work as a neurosurgeon until 2015. Even after stepping down from the leadership post, he remained one of the region’s key specialists and saw patients daily.
It was under Valery Vladimirovich that microsurgical and endoscopic operations, treatment of cerebral aneurysms, complex forms of strokes and skull-base tumors began to be actively used in the Nizhny Novgorod region. He not only introduced new methods but also united young doctors around him, generously sharing his experience and knowledge.
Colleagues remember him as a principled, modest and truly humane doctor whom patients trusted without question. For his contribution to medicine Valery Khomenok was awarded the Order of Honour, the “Excellent Healthcare” badge and was given the title of Honored Physician of the Russian Federation.
“Komsomolskaya Pravda — Nizhny Novgorod” offers its condolences to the family and close relatives of Valery Vladimirovich.
