From the Gospel to Fabergé: masterpieces of jewelry art were presented at the NGHM

A renewed exhibition of Russian artistic silver has opened at the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum. The museum now features two new halls: "Artistic Silver of the 17th – First Half of the 19th Century" and "Fabergé and His Contemporaries" (0+).
At the center of attention is an impressive altar Gospel from 1706. The book, in a gilded silver cover, weighs about 25 kilograms and was made in Moscow. It is not only a rare artifact but also evidence of the high level of jewelry craftsmanship of the time.
The second part of the exhibition is devoted to works of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. Here visitors can see pieces by the famous firm Fabergé and other Russian masters who worked in the same era. The true gem of the collection is the floral study "A Sprig of Forget-me-nots in a Small Vase" — a miniature composition of silver, turquoise, diamonds and crystal. This exhibit entered the museum in 1919 from the collection of industrialist S. S. Abamelek‑Lazarev.
In addition, the exhibition presents other items created by Fabergé’s craftsmen: elegant elements of table service that combine oxidized silver and faceted crystal.
Works by Fabergé’s contemporary jewelers have also received attention. There are both utilitarian items — cutlery with handles in beaded sheaths and an elegant sugar bowl — and decorative pieces: souvenir ladles with bright enamel and icon covers.
The atmosphere is complemented by lithographs with decorative sketches by artists of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory.
