A camera recording traffic violations at the pedestrian crossing has started operating at Gorky Square.

      A new photo-and-video traffic violation enforcement complex has begun operating at one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in Nizhny Novgorod, located on Gorky Square. The system is installed in an area with heavy pedestrian traffic, where the risk of road traffic accidents is particularly high. This was reported by the Center for Transport Systems Development.

      In its first week of operation the camera detected nearly 600 violations. The largest number of cases were related to unfastened seat belts, which remains one of the most common and ignored traffic rules.

      As the agency noted, the main purpose of the new equipment is to strengthen control over drivers’ behavior near the crossing and to improve pedestrian safety. The camera records failures to yield at the "zebra" crossing, as well as phone conversations while driving.

      Acting director of the Center for Transport Systems Development Alexander Bachurin emphasized that the installation of the complex is aimed at reducing accidents in areas with high pedestrian density.

      "Using a phone while driving is one of the main causes of driver inattention and potential traffic accidents. Therefore it is especially important to monitor such violations near pedestrian crossings," he stressed.

      Recall that drivers face a fine of 1,500 to 2,500 rubles for failing to yield to pedestrians at a crossing.

      Earlier it was reported that the traffic-violation camera on Gagarin Avenue in Nizhny Novgorod was declared operational after an inspection.
